Thyroid and Metabolism: Balancing Your Metabolic Fire

Thyroid health in Ayurveda is about maintaining proper Pitta balance and ensuring adequate nourishment of the gland.

Ayurveda does not name the thyroid. It describes Agni — digestive and metabolic fire. Hypothyroidism maps almost exactly to Kapha excess. Hyperthyroidism maps almost exactly to Pitta excess.
The frameworks arrived independently. The overlap is not coincidence.

Understanding Your Thyroid Through Dosha

The thyroid gland is the seat of Agni — the transformative metabolic fire that converts food to energy and regulates the body's temperature. When thyroid function is optimal, Agni is balanced. When thyroid function is dysregulated, it reflects fundamental imbalance in Pitta (for hyperthyroidism) or Kapha (for hypothyroidism).

Hypothyroidism
Kapha excess pattern
• Weight gain despite normal eating
• Fatigue, cold sensitivity
• Depression, slow thinking
• Constipation, puffiness
• Hair thinning, dry skin
Ayurvedic support:
Trikatu, dry ginger, vigorous exercise, reduce dairy and wheat, Triphala nightly
Hyperthyroidism
Pitta excess pattern
• Weight loss, rapid metabolism
• Heat intolerance, sweating
• Anxiety, irritability, insomnia
• Heart palpitations
 Skin flushing
Ayurvedic support:
Brahmi, Shatavari, cooling diet, reduce alcohol, early sleep — always alongside medical treatment
